Hello to all Arch-Factory’s fans! For a long time we had any posts in this blog, but at this moment we are reformulating some things, and this part of the website will be again highlighted! From this moment, Arch-Factory’s Blog will start to publish contents related with Architecture and Design, even if it’s not totally related with the CG area. We are extremelly fans of new and original things, and our biggest concern is to show you some new and cool stuff for your inspiration!

So, Today we will be posting something a bit different from the last posts ever posted in this Blog. But it doesn’t means that this article is not interesting enough. Because this can show us a bit of what’s behind of creating a successful brand, evern if it’s for a bycicle brand. Yes, it’s right, today we are posting an article related to one of the most stylish and original bycicle brands ever existed in Portugal!

DryDrill is the brand of personalized Frames and Wheels, and it was founded by Henrique Pinho. This crazy idea was originated by more than one head, but with the right tools, everything got his path, and keeps growing on and on.

They are located in one of the most beautiful Portuguese cities, Porto, in a small “Factory” full of Steel, Dreams and Denim.

By the fact of getting in the Commercial Architecture and by working in several brands for many years, had arrived the moment that i’ve felt the need of creating my own brand which was part of my indentity, which had my own blood. As any idea, i think that passing by a bad sleeping night achieving the most desirable information, it started to flow with a set of words that i wished to connect and give them a unique meaning of the the brand DryDrill.

Dry from Denim in it’s RAW state and Drill from mechanic. Now the question…Why to connect this two worlds?

Simple indeed, because both are industrial but through the design and engineering we can transform them into beautiful and incredible pieces e very personal too. And most of all i want to be next to people too. Besides that, i’m crazy about Denim and Steel, i have to follow what i love most in my life..

The next phase was the part of the conception of the product i’ve always wanted. In Portugal it was an acquired fact, but it was hard to catch, it was an year of pure fatigue, designing geometry, prototypes, experimenting solutions for the constructions, tests and more tests , only just for the frames and the wheels. Because if we talk about the solution of the final configuration and sales management, the path was more easy, we had laugh about it, we were totally happy for participating in something different and in an idea that was always clean in our heads.

The idea of relocating a bycicle out of the traditional bycicle world was obvious for everyone in the team, the main goal was to turn out the bycicle into every person’s part, and we only can do it if we can answer to what people are searching for, freedom for choosing and something which people can indentify with and be identified by others too. In a short resume, the attitude had to shine through this fashion piece.

Thinking outside of the box ou passing for a blue ocean, whatever… was the main goal of this project, the goal really was to realize something which had to give us lots of pleasure to do.

By the returning that we are getting from the audience, this main goal was well succeeded. Now it’s time for the hard work…

Feel free to visit their website where you can make your own and personalized vintage bycicle!

Arch-Factory would like to thank DryDrill and Henrique Pinho for the kindness and availability for this article. We are really appreciated for having a great brand like this one in our country and wish you the best luck possible for your business!

Frank Kunert is a German Photographer and Artist, who does a full original and creative photography method by himself. Known as the Small World Photographer, Frank photographs his own 3d models done with plasticine, deco boards and paint. Yes, you can bet. He has created all of this abstract environments and worlds, all of them.

“Kunert has spent weeks, sometimes even months, working with deco boards, plasticine and paint, in order to model his thoughts in 3D. With an exceptional eye for detail, he has constructed faultless models, and created scenes that look just like the real thing. Kunert never flicks on his studio lights and reaches for his large-format camera until he feels that his models have reached a state of perfection — until they have become little worlds of their own.”

A multi-storied apartment building with gray-beige stucco: the epitome of lower middle-class tristesse. A throw rug and a doormat hang over the balustrade of a balcony. Another has a single flower box, a third, a deck chair. A familiar sight at first glance. After a second or third take, however, it becomes perfectly clear that something is amiss. The balcony doors lead nowhere, and the balconies themselves are not accessible.

In “Apartment with balcony,” there is no architectural scandal attempting to be uncovered by photographer Frank Kunert. The photograph stems from a series of works entitled “Photographs of Small Worlds,” which ingeniously, slyly and subtly play with our sense of perception, as well as with our expectations — taking both ad absurdum.

Behind crazy ideas, it can be beautiful too. And Frank Kunert works are one of the cases in this surreal world. And that’s all my friend, hope you liked it!

Hello everyone, and sorry for not updating the blog lately. But the truth is that our life, in certain moments, begins to force us deciding which is the best options we have at the moment. And that’s because i am writing this post today.

Does anytime of your life you felt that you need your daily time, only to your works for international clients, because is what trully inspires you and your main love in this work is to know new people, new workflows and give to your client the best results you can with all you’ve learned until today? But instead of that you are passing at least 8 hours per day working for your boss and of course you don’t have permission to do your stuff..

Don’t you feel the need of being your own boss?!

Due to this kind of situations, you see yourself forced to take a decision, and thinking in all the good and bad things that it can bring you. Principally if one of your client offers you the opportunity of your life, and will put your working in what you really love?

I have to be totally honest, some days i believe this and have a direct conclusion to all. For the worst or for the best, there’s one thing that i’m sure in life.. We’re always dreaming about the perfect work, and practicing for it. And more, don’t lose what you think that is the best opportunity of your life.

Since lately I’ve developed a lot of work, today I had some spare time to write a little here on the blog. It is also a walk with so much work that I come here to share a little of what has been the last two weeks of my life. Recently started working in a studio called NAD \ Design Solutions as a Architectural and Design CG Artist with a large team of professionals, which revealed a new stage in my life, with new objectives and targets.

A few days ago, a moment of pause has become a great moment of inspiration with my colleagues. And there was a job i thoroughly aroused attention for their originality and creativity. We found something new that was recreated from the already well-known Tilt Shift Effect.

Thierry Poiraud has created a magical spot for Réseau Ferré de France, the company Responsible for managing the Frenchnational railway network produced by Paranoid with VFX Company by Buf. Although traditionally the film was shot using Arricameras ALEXA.

Poiraud employed Variety of techniques including model making and 3D animation to create a World Thatmarries real life and magic of the miniature railway featuring the music of Metronomy.

The Department of Architecture is part of the Arts School of Évora, which includes the Design and Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Music, thereby providing an environment of multidisciplinary study in art education and architecture in Portugal.

To talk about the experience of studying in this unique environment, nothing better than a student of Architecture course. Maria Lima, with 20 years old and the world of architecture well known in her family, Maria accepted to talk about how everything works, what kind of projects are developed and who are the great minds behind all this force to try to stimulate the minds of Évora people, when modern architecture is spoken.

How do you feel about the Architecture Course here in Évora?

The architecture course in Evora had its origin in 2001. As a recent student, I feel that the course has evolved a lot since my first year. The fact that a School of Arts allows us to relate different areas makes the workplace very interesting. I can’t evaluate if it is the best course of architecture in Portugal, but I know that it is the main objective of the course. In this course we can highlight the merit of student work, which is increasingly recognized and the commitment of teachers to make it an example.

What have been the best personal rewards of studying architecture until now?

The architecture has made me more interested in the arts. Studying architecture requires a lot of reading and observation. I find myself walking through the streets of Evora and questioning myself of certain architectural details, which is quite interesting, because since my childhood I pass near them and only at this moment I see them in this way. In my opinion, the architecture gives us another view of the world, makes us think and want to know more.

New system or Old system?

I consider both important. The new system would not exist without the old, but I admit that the universities can’t use the two together. In Évora, we work extensively with maquettes, which allows students to move closer to reality. On the other hand, plan design and cutting design are essential in the work of an architect, not only because it will be their tools later, but also because they help to understand the place of study.

For everything you learned please define the field of architecture in “Professionalism”

It’s subjective a teacher evaluate the professionalism of a student, because everybody has different ways of working. Of course, there are basic parameters to keep up the pace of lessons. For example, it is important the student always present some work to the teacher, because it will demonstrate that it is an interested person and that counts a lot in this course. This year, there were about 90 students at my class, divided by four teachers, so imagine how important it is to be a person who is always working. It is the only way of getting the attention of the teacher.

What are the key influences in your work/projects today?

I compulsively follow the work of several architects. Before any project exercise, I do depth research based on the theme of the work. My main influences are the architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Fernando Távora, two examples of good Portuguese architecture. Eduardo Chillida has also a huge influence on me, because I admire his sensitivity in the construction of his sculptures.

Which is the best moment of your day?

The best moment of my day is when I can quietly reflect about architectural work while I listen some music, which does not happen often, due to the amount of time I spend with Project (main discipline of the course).

Would Mies Van Der Rohe liked the computer?

Mies Van Der Rohe was a modern architect who was trying to reconcile the tasks of design with construction, so I think the computer would help you. Today, there are already programs that combine these two aspects. Mies Van Der Rohe would be the computer at that time?

Do you discuss your projects with your father/brother?

Yes, especially with my father. My father is a great support to me and from whom I inherited this interest in architecture. The fact that he lives in Evora allow him to be even more present in my academic career. Our discussions about my works are very interesting. My brother does not live with me, so it becomes more complicated discuss with him my work, although I have a great pleasure when I’m talking to him about architecture.

What advice would you give to someone entering the field of architecture, specially in Évora?

Not everyone is motivated when they see their names on the entry list of the course of architecture in Evora, I admit that I have felt the same way, but today I am happy for didn’t ask for transfer to another university. The course is very dynamic and we have regular conferences with architects. From the third year, you can participate in international competitions in which many students have been recognized for their work. It is a recent course with great workplaces.
